The $60 Guest Posting Gig that Took 20 Minutes

I wasn't going to post today, but my guest post was published on FreelanceSwitch, so I thought I'd pass some info along on this cool site.

Remember a little bit ago when I told you that guest posting pays -- well in this case it paid double. Not only did they pay $60 for the post (snatch!), it pays in traffic too because this is a really popular, traffic-driving freelance site. It only took me about 20 minutes to put this post together (I can write about marketing in my sleep).

About FreelanceSwitch.com

FYI, if you don't know about FreelanceSwitch, they are a freelance portal that offers insightful articles by some of the top graphic designers, web designers and freelance writers on the web.

They have a job board (mostly design and techie-type creative jobs, but some for freelance writers and bloggers too); a really cool forum with topics like "Freelancing in Tokyo" and "How to tell someone their website sucks?"; podcasts; and tools and resources for freelancers.

It's one of the top freelancing sites on the web -- and they published little ole me. They may have gotten the short end of the stick, but they can't take it back! I'm simply thrilled.

Could Article Marketing Be THE Perfect Marketing Strategy?

Today over at BloggingTips.com, I wrote about article marketing. As my little article marketing contest is showing quantifiable results, I thought, "Hmmm, mabye it's time to revisit this old lover!" Read When Article Marketing is THE Perfect Marketing Strategy to find out if you should give this "ex" a chance.

Article Marketing Contest Update: It's 10:48 pm EST and I'm about to submit the article Avoid High Gas Prices: 3 Easy-to-Start, Online Work-from-Home Careers to Amazines.com right now. It's a "link bait*" article I fired off last week, but contained an interesting bit of info freelance writers should take encouragement in, as I note below. Want to know more about article marketing? Click here.

Why SEO Writers Will Never Be Out of Work

FYI, did you know that conservatively (as I wrote in the above-referenced article), it is estimated that about 100,00 new websites are added to the web each day. Most of these are businesses. And, what do they need to get noticed? Content. The smart ones soon figure out that they need SEO content, ie, content that allows surfers to find them online.

So you see SEO writers -- we'll never be out of work!

*Note: I'll talk more about link bait writing on Friday. No post tomorrow, I have a client's website to finish up -- I'm sssooooooo behind!

Blog Posting Frequency: How Many Times a Day Should You Post to Build Traffic

One of the most effective ways to increase your blog's traffic is to post to it several times a day. But, if you're like me -- an overworked freelance writer who doesn't have time to do that -- you may be thinking, "Do I really need to post several times a day?"

Blog Posting Frequency: Why You Shouldn't Worry about Posting Multiple Times a Day

My answer is probably not, and here's why.

Search engines look for fresh content. While posting more frequently to your blog will get your site crawled more by search engines (hence increase your backlinks), if your blog posts quality content, it will get linked to (create backlinks) and over time, you will still build up site traffic.

The phrase over time is italicized because it's a slower build.

The thing is, some popular sites (eg, DoshDosh.com) post less than once a day and still get tremendous traffic. But, they've built their reputation to the point where they can afford to do this. And, as Maki points out in this post, you need to figure out what you want from your blog. That, in large part, will help you determine a blog posting frequency.

How to Quickly Build a Blog Audience

If you want to quickly build a blog audience, though, you will no doubt have to post not only top-quality content, but do it several times a day when you first start out. Then, you'll have to promote it. This can be via article marketing, social networking, PPC ads, etc. You can slack off after you've hit critical mass, which will probably take six months to a year or more. Again, it all depends on what you want your blog to achieve.

As blogging Johnathan Fields reveals in his post, Posting patterns of top-bloggers revealed, "It seems pretty clear the biggest bang for your blog-launch buck and quest to hit your tipping point is daily posting. And, once you’ve hit that magical critical mass that fuels highly-accelerated growth, a variety of options are available, with the unifying quest being the need to maintain quality."

I've vascillated on this. I tried to cut back consistently -- and do when I'm extremely busy -- but I tend to pretty much post 3-4 times a week. As I tend to write long posts, I don't feel the pressure to absolutely, positively push out 5-7 posts a week.

What do you think? How often do you update your blog? What posting schedule would you like me to maintain?

Article Marketing Contest Update: On Friday, I posted the article, 8 Keys to Making Between $75,000 to $100,000/year as a Freelance SEO Writer, to IdeaMarketers.com. Yesterday, I posted the article, Blog Posting Rates: How Much Should You Charge for Blog Posting, to Amazines.com. Today I posted 5 Signs It's Time to Move Your Blog to Another Platform to Amazines.com.

[Note: I tend to post to these two article directories a lot b/c they're not fussy like EzineArticles.com, for example, yet still carry high-quality articles.]

Hope everybody enjoyed the long weekend. I worked. I tend not to mind working on holidays because the pressure of checking email, getting back to clients and being "at the ready" is not there. So on those rare occasions when I do find myself having to work on a holiday, I find it more relaxing than cumbersome.

And, the fact that I'm going to Jamaica in July doesn't have a thing to do with this attitude :-).

Why Darren Rowse & John Chow Scare Me: How Guest Blogging Helped Me to Overcome Fear

Today's post covers how I recently stared a fear I harbored right in the screen (face) -- and backed it down!

Have you ever been afraid to approach a popular site because you think, "What if my content isn't good enough; what if I get turned down; or, my stuff will never make it onto that blog."

John over at Poewar recently wrote about this in his post, Fear and the Guest Blogger. Well, I'd faced this a couple of weeks ago, with some amazing results. Out of 8 guest posts I've sent out, 5 have been picked up, with one leading to the possiblity of a regular writing gig for a large online career site.

Talk about confronting fears paying off! Read all about it in today's post, Why Darren Rowse and John Chow Scare Me: How Guest Blogging Helped Me to Overcome Fear. The article also covers guest blogging rules and some open guest blogging opportunities.

How 1 Freelancer Netted Enough Clients in 12 Hours to Hand in His 2 Week’s Notice the Next Day

Did you read yesterday’s newsletter? If not, you missed out on the “newbie” freelancer who netted enough clients in 12 hours to make him give his notice at his waiter’s job the next day. Read it here and consider becoming a subscriber. Once the new blog is up and running, newsletter content will only be released to subscribers.

Article Marketing Contest Update: I submitted the article How to Let Go of the Fear of Starting a Fulltime Freelance Writing Career to EzineArticles.com and IdeaMarketers.com today.

REMINDER: I've left wordpress (read why in this issue of the newsletter) and will continue to blog here -- for at least the next three to four months, if not longer. This URL has good search engine juice, and until I can get my new blog established, I'm just gonna keep updating this one.

Guest Posts, Article Marketing Contest & Blog Update

Today's post is a hodge podge.

Blog Difficulty Update. I've moved BACK to blogger. It's 10:15pm EST and I'm dead tired. What does this have to do with my blog trouble? It's taken hours out of my work day, leaving me backlogged and pissed beyond belief. But, like most things in life, it's a blessing in disguise.

I've been wanting to have my blog professionally designed and hosted on my own domain for about a year now. So, in light of this debacle, I'm biting the bullet and getting it done. Just hired a firm, and it should be completed by the end of the first week of June -- at the lastest.

To repeat, I've left wordpress and will continue to blog here -- for at least the next three to four months, if not longer. This URL has good search engine juice, and until I can get my new blog established, I'm just gonna keep updating this one.

Guest Posting Opportunity at an Established Blog: Meryl.net, which gets 4000-5000 visitors a day and has been online since 2000 is seeking guest posters. Meryl, the "maven" behind the content there is going on vacation and for the first time is opening up her blog to guest posters. I've already hopped on this wonderful opportunity and submitted my guest post!

FYI, guest posting is an excellent way to drive traffic to your site/blog, especially when it's written for an established blog like Meryl's. Meryl writes:

Authors get entries into author-only prizes for their contributions. Articles can cover any of the following: Writing, Freelancing, Marketing, Web site design, usability, etc., and/or Technology.

Find full details here.

Article Marketing Contest Update: I submitted the article Make Money w/Instantly Downloadable Ebooks: Turn into an e-Junkies to Amazines.com. I also posted it to AssociatedContent.com, which I've come to think of as more of a social bookmarking/article marketing site. I explain why in this post (start reading at the subheading Why I'm Making More Money with AssociatedContent (AC) Since They STOPPED Paying For My Content).

Two bright spots of news today: Had a phone consult with a potential new client. Once I sign their confidentiality agreement, they said work would be forthcoming. So, I go to bed a bit frustrated at the technological side of my business, but always grateful for the this thing I call -- the freelance life!

On a personal note, an impromptu dinner invite from my girlfiend, who cooked a delicious meal. The three of us (me, her and my fiance) had a grand time. Even though we live in the same subdivision, we don't get to see each other that much. What I particularlarly loved about this was that it broke up my routine. Socializing on a week night, lord it's been so long. I DO need to get out more!

One load of laundry to put in, a bed to make up, a shower to take -- and I'm off to sandman land!

Hope your Tuesday was indeed grand.

Drive Traffic to Your Site/Blog: Join the Article Marketing Contest!

In the most recent post, I forgot to report my article marekting contest posting for today. My search engine stats have increased yet again. As I reported in the inital post, my results were boosted by 1,000 in only 3 days of article marketing.

Today, I checked again, and it's grown from 26,200 results returned last Thursday, to 26,500 today -- 300 more searches returned. Read the initial post about the contest to see what all this means.

Today's Article Marketing Entry: I posted the article 3 Reasons to Write for Low-Paying Online Sites to two article directories today -- IdeaMarketers and Amazines. In the initial post entry, the top 10 article banks are listed so you can choose which ones you want to submit to -- or get really ambitious and submit to all of them!

Want to learn more about article marketing? Get the ebook, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Article Marketing: Results of a 30-day article marketing experiment, here.

Where did YOU post today? (If you haven't started, it's not too late to get that search engine juice flowing!)

Yuwanda
P.S.: On 4/30/08, Inkwell Editorial's blog moved to WordPress. We're having some technical difficulty, so I'll be posting here until it's resolved. You didn't really think I'd let a lil ole thing like WordPress technical difficulty keep me off the information superhighway, did ya?!

P.P.S.: Have you heard about how some freelancers are getting a pretty fast start (I'm talking literally just days to land their first client) making money as SEO writers? What is this, and how do I make $200-$500/day doing this kind of easy writing? Click here for details.

What to Do When Your Blog Goes Down

I was involved in a crash on the information superhighway. Translation: My blog is inactive over at wordpress and there's not a darn thing I've been able to do about it -- yet!

As many of you know, I migrated this blog from blogger to wordpress on 4/30/08. I'm waiting on a response from their Help Desk, but as you can imagine -- I'm frantic and have been all day.

How to Respond When You're Involved in a Crash on the Information Superhighway

So, what should you do if your blog goes down? Well, there's always CRYING, which I was almost at the point of when I first discovered it was down. RAGE is good -- especially when you can't get anyone to get back to you and you have paid advertising out there. DRINKING -- I considered this, but have client copy to get in, so didn't want to chance any drunk ramblings.

So, what THIS blogger did was go back to any old standby (blogger). Thank goodness the migration is less than a month old so readers still look for me here. Now, as I promised in my post last Thursday-- which I would like to link to but can't because the dat blane thing is down (I reposted that day's post here here cuz it just bugged me to death not to be able to link to it) -- here's my promised topic today.

Why I'm Making More Money with AssociatedContent (AC) Since They STOPPED Paying For My Content

I used to recycle my blog posts with AC. Meaning, once I wrote my posts, I would then sell the content to AC. I would receive anywhere from $4 to $9 for each recycled post. Then a few weeks ago, AC stopped paying for recycled content. At first, I was hopping mad because I had been pulling in an extra $20-$40/week selling my blog posts. This was residual income for me.

BUT, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum -- ah, I mean, during this transition. I reminded myself that AC has the right to set the rules as they see fit. One of the reasons I like freelancing is that I get to run my business the way I want to. And, that means being able to tweak the rules as my business needs change.

So instead of getting mad, I checked myself and changed my mindset. Instead of viewing AC as a direct income stream, I focused on using it as an indirect income stream. How?

How to Use Associated Content to Make Passive Income

When AC changed the rules, one of the things they allowed you to do is publish content just for page views only. They offered this all along as well, so now I focus solely on my audience at AC. Let me explain.

Building an Audience is to Your Benefit

Even though the upfront payment was nice, AC also offered page view performance payments (PV Payments). For every 1,000 page views your article receives, they pay you $1.50. This month, I received my biggest PV payout ever -- a bit more than $40. Now even though this isn't a lot, remember, it's money I didn't have to do anything for.

And not for nothing, but those $1.50 payments add up fast -- especially if you have other products you want to introduce your readers to on the backend.

As of today's date, I have 108 subscribers to my content on AC. Now that I'm not searching for titles to write about just to pick up a few bucks (which I handn't done for a while anyway), I focus only on what these subscribers want to read -- freelance writing related content.

In the past, I'd written about everything from the best flowers to plant in spring to deodorant reviews. Although the majority of my articles have always been freelance writing related, subscribers could never rely on receiving this type of content 100% of the time. Now they can.

Because subscribers know that that's what they're going to be getting from me, they're much more likely to read and recommend my content -- leading to more subscribers.

Social Bookmarking: So, my advice to anyone who wants to submit content to AC "for free" is to change your mindset about it. Think of it more as a social bookmarking site than an "online community news site," as they like to market themselves.

Why You Shouldn't Depend Solely on Other Sites for Your Traffic -- 2 Lessons Learned from This Experience

1
. No matter what site you decide to get involved with online -- focus on building a community there. For, the rules of the game may change from site to site, but if you've built up a loyal base, a good portion of them will follow you.

2. Build your own online presence -- so you have somewhere for subscribers to still reach and follow you if the rules do change on some other site/community.

Happy online marketing -- and I hope your Monday has been a mite bit better than mine,

Thinking about writing and selling an ebook? Don't make this critical mistake

In a post over at Poewar, John Hewitt (the insightful webmaster), has an interesting discussion about content vs. commerce. I usually don’t post on Fridays, but because of the article marketing contest I roped myself into, I will be for the next 4 weeks, at least. So, here goes.

The following comment from John’s article got me to thinking, “Bloggers like to feel as if they are part of a community. A heavy sales pitch can take you right out of that community."

Why Building a Community is Important to Writing and Selling Ebooks

What this made me think about was community. If you’ll read the comment section of the aforementioned article, you’ll see that John and I see selling on your blog/website a bit differently. BUT, what we both agree on is that you must build an audience first before you start.

Besides Google ads, which I don’t think I added for months after I started my blog, I had no other advertising there other than my ebooks. But, remember, I’ve had a website since 1999, so had a built-in audience who followed me over to my blog.

So, if you’re thinking about writing and selling an ebook, while you’re getting the writing done, spend a few months building a community. Then, you’ll have an audience who are already pre-sold on your product, which makes the sale that much easier.

Article Marketing Contest Update: I posted this article to ArticleDashboard.com today. They usually approve them within 24 hours.

Proof that Article Marketing Works! The article I posted there just two days ago on the 14th has already been downloaded 16 times (Freelance Writers: How to Earn 6 Figures by Keeping a To Do List). Imagine having 20, 30, 50 or 100 articles working for you in various article marketing directories. Post every day, and you will!

Go get that search engine juice! To which article directory have you posted today?

3 Days of Article Marketing Boosted Search Results by 1,000

I recently bumped up my article marketing again. This past Monday, I started submitting my articles to article directories on a regular basis. [See Article Marketing Contest particulars below.]

I hadn't done this for a while, but when I noticed that I've made more passive income from AssociatedContent since they changed their payment policies* (see memo about this below), I decided . . . hmmm, let me get back into this.

Results from 3 Days of Article Marketing

My goal is to submit one article to at least one top-rated article directory (aka article bank) a day. I started on Monday and noticed that a search of my name has generated 1,000 more results since Monday. How do I know?

Well, when I started on Monday, I did a Google search for "Yuwanda Black". It returned 25,200 results. Today, I did the same search and it returned 26,200 results. And, I noticed that my Google AdSense earnings have ticked up just tiny bit too. Now, in the big ole scheme of things, this doesn't mean much. But it does clue me in that my content is being picked up and distributed, hence my website and blog are getting valuable search engine link juice. All of this means I'm getting more blog/website traffic and making a little more money -- so this little bit of article marketing is working. So, I'm running with that!

The Top 10 Article Directories

Wondering which article diretories are the best? The following 10, as listed by Marnie from IdeaMarketers.com:

http://www.amazines.com/
http://www.articlealley.com/
http://www.articlecity.com/
http://www.articledashboard.com/
http://www.articledepot.co.uk/
http://www.articlefinders.com/
http://www.certificate.net/
http://www.ezinearticles.com/
http://www.freesticky.com/
http://www.ideamarketers.com/

FYI, Marnie, who is the brains behind IdeaMarketers.com and quite a few other sites, dispenses some interesting info on article marketing in the article, Top 10 Article Banks. She talks about duplicate content, how many directories you should submit to, generating traffic, etc. She should know, as she runs one of the Top 10 Article Banks on the net.

ARTICLE MAREKTING CONTEST: How I Can Help You Drive More Traffic to Your Blog/Website w/Free Article Marketing

I'm inviting you to join me in what I'm calling a "link juice" contest. Here's how it will work.
You commit to posting one article a day (M-F) for 30 days at any article directory you want. You then leave a post on this blog everyday with a link to the article and/or the title (eg, I submitted the article "How to Drive More Traffic to Your Blog" to EzineArticles.com today).

Sometimes, article directories take couple of days or weeks to post your article, so that's why leaving the title (the exact title) is important because once it does show up, surfers will be able to find it via a title and "your name" search.

Are you up for the challenge? To start things off, today I posted Blog Marketing: 7 Ways to Make More Money by Weekend Blogging to IdeaMarketers.com. FYI, most of my posts are recycled from older blog posts that I think deserve a little new life based on the questions I get from readers.

Your turn! Where did you post today? In 30 days, I'll be asking you for updates on your site/blog traffic, so try not to miss a day. (NOTE: There are no prizes or anything; this contest is all about staying motivated. Just think of how many new readers you have to chance to get in front of). On that note . . .

I encourage all participants to actively read and link to the post of others in the contest -- if you find the article relevant to your blog/website. For more on this, read the insightful post, Don't be a Comment Whore: Attract Traffic Not Annoyance by Jennifer over at CatalystBlogger.

Note about Article Marketing Directory Guidelines and Stipulations

Time to Post: Articles post instantly at ArticleDashboard.com and IdeaMarketers.com. EzineArticles.com takes a couple of days, as does Amazine.com. ArticleAlley.com can take up to two weeks (those are the ones I've submitted to so far this week).

HTML & More: Also note that each article marketing directory has different posting guideliens (ie, use of HTML, links), which can make some of them a pain to post to. I find EzineArticles.com to be the biggest pain to post to, but it is the #1 article marketing directory on the web, so I recommend it.

*I'll talk about how I've made more passive income from AC since their policy change in Monday's post. Don't forget, you can get freelance writing jobs here (I've been a little lax this week, but you can always saunter over to Craigslist and Helium's Marketplace to find new gigs).

Sincerely,
Yuwanda Black, Publisher

Make Money Selling Information Products Online with e-Junkie

I've been writing, publishing and selling and ebooks on the web since 2004. Outside of a short span with PayPal instant download (it just stopped working for me one day, to this day I don't know why), I've always manually emailed orders to buyers.

This weekend though, I migrated all of my ebooks to e-Junkie, an instant download site. This means when customers order, they get the information immediately -- which should translate into more sales. For more information on selling information products online and about e-Junkie in particular, see today's post over at our new blogspot, InkwellEditorial.wordpress.com.
